Why Winter Orders Sneak Up on Everyone

Fall coaches get a natural summer runway to plan. Winter coaches are often teaching, coaching a fall sport, or running open gyms right up until tryouts — and tryouts themselves add a wrinkle: you don't know your final roster until two weeks before the season. The programs that handle this well split the decision from the roster.

The Split-Decision Timeline

• September: Decide everything except quantities — items, colors, design, decoration. Get mockups approved while your evenings still exist.
• Early October: Lock the package and approve the proof. Sizes and the final roster come after cuts.
• After tryouts: Final roster orders drop in immediately — because everything else was already approved, the order moves the moment the roster does.
• First practice: Gear's there. You look like the most organized coach in the league, which you are.

Winter-Specific Gear Notes

• Basketball: practice tees plus a reversible or two-color option for scrimmage splits saves daily pinnie chaos.
• Wrestling: the room is hot and laundry is constant — moisture-wicking fabric and at least two shirts per athlete.
• Swim & dive: deck gear is the practice gear — warm hoodies and joggers get worn daily from November to February.
• All sports: winter is hoodie season; adding one to the package is the most-thanked decision a coach makes.
