Ending Scrimmage Chaos: Two-Color Practice Systems That Run Themselves

Count the minutes your team spends sorting itself into scrimmage squads — hunting for pinnies, arguing over who's "dark" — and multiply by every practice all season. It adds up to hours of lost reps, and it's completely solvable with how you order practice shirts.

The Two-Shirt System

Order every player the same two shirts in two colors — say, forest green and white, both with the team design. From then on, splits are a sentence: "Starters in green, scout team in white." No pinnies, no confusion, and as a bonus, "green Tuesday / white Thursday" makes laundry accountability visible from across the gym.

This costs nothing extra beyond the second shirt most rosters need anyway (see our take on how many shirts players actually need — for 3+ practices a week, it's at least two). Two shirt colors with the same one-color print is still a one-color job; two ink colors is a second screen and is quoted separately.

When Reversibles Earn Their Spot

Reversible jerseys — one garment, two colors — are the classic basketball answer, and they're great when mid-practice switching matters: a player flips from offense to defense in five seconds. Trade-offs to know honestly: reversibles limit decoration options (printing must work on both faces), the fabric runs meshier and lighter than a standard tee, and they read as "gym class" to some teams. For basketball and lacrosse they're a staple; for most other sports, the two-shirt system does the same job with more design freedom and better off-field wear.

Which Sports Benefit Most

• Basketball: the original use case — daily 5-on-5 splits.
• Soccer, lacrosse, hockey: constant small-sided games; two colors means instant teams.
• Football: offense/defense or ones/twos color-coding simplifies every period.
• Volleyball: A-side/B-side scrimmages and position-group splits.
