Outfitting a Team on a Booster Budget (Without Buying Junk)

Every booster treasurer knows the squeeze: the program deserves great gear, the account says otherwise. The good news is that gear budgets are rarely killed by quality — they're killed by decisions made in the wrong order. Here's how tight-budget programs get gear they're proud of.

Stretch #1: Simplify the Design, Not the Shirt

In screen printing, each ink color is a separate screen and press run. A sharp one-color design on a quality blank routinely costs less than a five-color design on a bargain blank — and looks dramatically better after ten washes. When budgets tighten, cut colors before cutting garment quality.

Stretch #2: One Design Across Everything

Running the same artwork on tees, hoodies, and shorts means one setup serving the whole order. Different designs per item multiplies setup work. Unified design isn't just cheaper — it's what makes a program look like a program.

Stretch #3: Order Together, Once

Quantity is the single biggest price lever in decorated apparel. Three small orders through the season cost meaningfully more than one combined order. Get the count right up front (one package order for the whole roster, coaches included, is the cheapest way to buy; packages start at $30 per player for a tee and short) and consolidate.

Stretch #4: Let Families Carry What They're Glad To

Many programs split it: the booster budget covers a core item for every player (equity matters — every kid gets the shirt), while optional extras like hoodies and joggers are family-purchased through the team store. Boosters protect their budget; families who want more gear get it; nobody fronts money.

The False Economies

  • Bottom-shelf blanks that shrink and pill — abandoned gear is 100% wasted budget.
  • The volunteer-run reorder — a second small order to fix sizing mistakes erases everything the "cheap" first order saved.
  • Skipping mockup review — a misspelled name or off-color print costs more than every corner you cut.

Tell Us the Budget — We'll Tell You the Truth

Give us your headcount and what you're working with, and we'll recommend the strongest package that fits — including which corners are safe to cut and which aren't. No calculators, no pressure, a real answer from a real person. Purchase orders accepted with agreed-upon terms. Tell us about your program.
