Cotton vs. Performance Fabric: What Actually Survives a Season of Practice

Every practice gear order starts with the same fork in the road: classic cotton or performance fabric? We print on both every week, so here's the honest version — including where each one disappoints.

The Case for Cotton

Cotton is comfortable from day one, prints beautifully, and feels like the team shirts everyone grew up with. For walkthrough-heavy sports, cooler seasons, and gear that doubles as everyday wear, it's still a great answer. Its weakness is water: soaked cotton gets heavy, stays wet, and clings — a real issue for high-sweat sports and summer conditioning.

The Case for Performance Fabric

Moisture-wicking polyester and poly-blends stay light when drenched, dry fast between drills, and hold their shape wash after wash. For football camps in August, wrestling rooms, and any sport where soaked-through is the default state, performance fabric earns its keep. The trade-offs: some players dislike the slicker feel, cheap versions hold odor, and decoration needs to be done right to stay flexible on stretchy fabric.

The Middle Path Most Teams Land On

Tri-blends and cotton-poly blends split the difference — softer than pure polyester, drier than pure cotton, and they've quietly become the most popular practice shirt choice we print. If your team spans multiple sports or seasons, a quality blend is the safest single answer.

A Quick Sport-by-Sport Cheat Sheet

  • Football, wrestling, summer conditioning: performance fabric, no contest.
  • Basketball, volleyball: performance or blend — gym humidity is real.
  • Baseball, softball, golf: blends carry the day; cotton fine for cage work.
  • Soccer, lacrosse, field sports: performance for summer, blends for fall/spring.
  • Spirit wear and off-field gear: cotton and soft blends — comfort wins.

The Part That Matters More Than Fabric

A mediocre shirt decorated well still looks like a team. A great shirt that never gets ordered because size collection fell apart looks like nothing. Tell us your sport and season and we'll recommend the right fabric for your program — then quote it per player as a package: one-color print and setup included. On the packages page, Entry is the classic 50/50 blend, Preferred is the softer tri-blend, and Brand Name is Nike Dri-FIT. Get my team's practice gear.
